Silent Spy for Windows Mobile

I AM TEMPORARILY NO LONGER MAINTAINING THIS CODE, I PLAN TO IMPROVE IT IN THE FUTURE. NOTE THAT THE PROGRAM RELIES ON THE SIM CARD USED BY THE OPERATOR. FOR THAT REASON, IT MAY NOT WORK WITH SOME PHONE OPERATORS.

Description

Silent Spy is a freeware for Windows Mobile that helps people finding their lost or stolen phones. The software was tested sucessfuly in some devices, however it is still in its beta version, before i can reach as many users as possible to give me feedbacks about possible bugs.

How it works

Silent Spy monitors your phone SIM card, authenticating it with a registered one. If this authentication fails, a sms message is sent to an alert number, informing that a new SIM card has been inserted in your phone.

An example of usage:

You, as the owner of your phone, register your SIM card as the only valid one. You decide that a friend or a relative should receive a message in case that your phone has been lost or stolen. That is your alert number! One day, you lose your phone device. You try to call your own number and you realize that your SIM is not active anymore. That's probably because someone swapped the SIM card. At the same moment, after inserting a new SIM card, the software sends out an sms to your registered alert number. The software will repeat the same procedure whenever Windows starts up. Silent Spy works all in the background, therefore the user doesn't receive any alerts or messages of what is going on. Since you have the new number which is using your device, it's up you to contact him/her and try to get it back.

Perfom a "soft reset" on your device after installing it, otherwise the application will fail. The best known way to perfom a soft reset, is inserting your stylus pen inside inside the hole located in you phone device.

Password for first log in: "123456".

Setting up the application

Install the cab, execute the application and log in with the following password: "123456" (change it after using it. Follow the instructions and change your information and application preferences.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does it detects that my SIM card was changed?

There are two execs within this same CAB. The first one Silent Spy.exe is responsible for setting up your information and preferences. The other one SilentSpyGuard.exe is the one which runs in every windows start to check your identity. Therefore you don't need to execute this file

2. Does it keep always running on the background?

Because the chances that you are going to be stolen or that you are going to lose your phone are very small and that you probably may never need it, from the performance point of view, would be kind of expensive to have something always running on the background. This application was designed to be extremely lightweight and to do one simple job: "Check the sim card and send a sms to an emergency number in case that your sim card doesn't match the inserted one". After doing that on start up, the program automaticaly shutdown, therefore not consuming any memory resources.

3. How can I change the SIM Card without raising an alert?

If you wish to change your SIM Card without raising an alert , you have to uncheck the "Send Alert" checkbox, save the modifications, and restart with another SIM card.

4. How can I register a SIM Card.

When you log in for the first time, the system will detect your SIM Card number, and will ask you to store it. If after you want to change the stored SIM card number, you have to access the same area with the new SIM card. After the login process, the system will ask if you want to store the new detected number.

5. How can I add an international phone as my alert number?

The field accepts only numbers as input to avoid a possible mistyping. To add an international number is not mandatory to use the + sign. Instead use the 00 option. An example for a german phone number: +49xxxxx(do not use like this) , instead use this notation 0049xxxxx.

Hello all I just want to add that it is impossible to satisfy all sim card. We rely on an API that sometimes won\'t have the right to access your SIM information. Therefore if you receive an ERROR on phone number field, there is nothing that I can do. Issues with different sim card providers have arised and there is nothing much to do, unless unistalling the software in case of receiving this message.

Hi Ivor , Take a look at question 4, of this FAQ. If you want to change your sim card number, do the following. First access your protected area , and uncheck the send alert field. Save your modifications. The exit the application, turn off your phone, change you card. When you enter now the protected area with your Sim card, if authentication succeds, the system will ask you if you want to store the new found number, and will present to you the new found on the sim card and the old that you have stated. If you wish you can store it, or simply ignore the message. However remember to uncheck before changing the card otherwise the system will raise an alert. I will add soon a suport for dual sim, then u dont need to do always this same procedure.

This is really a shame. But anyway, this is really a difficult problem to solve. The fact that i don\'t have access to other sim cards, besides the German ones, makes life really difficult to test with another provider. I received lots of message from people that had success, but it is also bad to know that other people found problems. The only way would be testing it with all the possible ways. I was thinking that i could deploy a testool in order to acquire such information from phones. In that way i could map the providers that let me get this info and the ones that I can\'t, and probably generating other cab packages to satisfy different users. Still i would have to rely on a large number of users in different countries to give me feedbacks about it and testing it would be a little annoying. Anyway i will give a try.

Even easier then hard reseting it would be uninstalling the program! Anyway the hard reset in my phone takes a three button combination therefore would be difficult to guess before an attempt to change the card. I think that is more likely that a stupid air head steals me, than a guy with sufficient knowledge about how to hard reset a phone. Anyway uninstalling or hard reseting the phone will defeat it!The best solution would be implementing it via hardware.

Please fix the hard reset \'bug\' in the software while you are it. Without locking down winmo in some kindof locked menu funktions, like the \'hard reset\'. I really did not wish to insult on freewarepocketpc, but this is fair to those users, who feel protected. How to you wish to fix the format \'bug\' when the pda is connected to a computer? Please, do not fool the users of your software, Felipe.

Hi Jason! I really didnt understand your question! What do you mean?! But really, there is no way to guarantee that the application will run after a hard reset! I don\'t get the point, it is just like formatting a computer....there is nothing i can do , just doing it by hardware !!!

Date: 2009-07-23 | Time: 02:28:51

Jason wrote:

What I mean is that the software will not work when I hard reset my pda. The software will not work when I format my PDA. How do you want to stop that? If somebody steals a phone/pda with your software installed and does a hard reset or formats the memory, your software will be gone from the memory. Thats the first thing somebody does after stealing a phone, and I am quite sure you know that too. So what is the deal here? Protection should protect. If you say you want to fix \'bugs\' in silentspy, then I want to see how you will fix the fact that a thief will run over your software real quick, then its gone from the memory of the pda. I am joking since I cannot believe you will manage to launch a version that will protect a pda. The idea is great though, keep it going, but be fair.

To Jason: Look, there is not a practical real system on the face of earth which is 100% secure. I think you know that. The algorithms for crypthography, the protocols that we use(such as SSL, which was recently broken), the hash functions, all of them can be broken, some with less effort then other ones. Anyway, what i wanted to say is that not even the undelying system which we developers use to build software are secure. So how would we manage to do something 100% secure?! No way!!! Have you heard about the Mifare system?! Mifare is a smart card that was developed by NXP semiconductors. The security of this smart card was broken by a group of researches. This affected more then 1 billion smart cards that were on the market.E.g car keys! This was the most famous smart card around the world, and still, it was broken! The guy could reproduce the same code for two different cars. So he could open the door of different cars with his key. Google it for more information. But back to the subject, i dont plan to launch a version which will defeat it. Even if there were means to implement it by hardware, still wouldn\'t be 100% secure. This is a freeware, I dont charge people for that and also dont ask for donations. Anyone is free to try, and i made it during my free time. By telling that i wasn\'t fair, this is not true, as you can see how many times i answered questions about what would happen if someone hard resets the phone.
